Please Note: A $20 nonrefundable, nontransferable application fee must accompany all applications. Auditions cannot be scheduled until the application form and fee have been received. Applications will be processed in the order received.  Apply early!


Audition Requirements

Admission to the Chester Springs Youth Orchestra, the Chester Springs Chamber Strings and the Chester Springs Sinfonietta is based on technical and musical ability as demonstrated in the audition.

Audition details are outlined below. At the end of each group is a link where you can download the appropriate application form to submit.

Chester Springs Youth Orchestra

Strings

  • Solo: A standard concerto or sonata of your choice – 1st movement.
  • Scales: Major and their relative minor scales up to 5 sharps and 5 flats.
  • Bowing: Advanced technique in legato, staccato, martele and detache.
  • Intonation: Intonation should be excellent in prepared music.
  • Sight Reading: The instrumentalist should have the ability to adequately read music at the same level as the suggested pieces.
  • Please bring an extra copy of your solo piece.

Woodwinds

  • Solo: A standard concerto or sonata of your choice – 1st movement.
  • Scales: Major and their relative minor scales up to 5 sharps and 5 flats.
  • Articulation: Legato, staccato and double tonguing.
  • Intonation: Intonation should be excellent in prepared music.
  • Transposition:
    • Clarinets – An understanding and ability to transpose from "A" to "C" parts.
    • Bassoon – The ability to play in the tenor cleft.
  • Sight Reading: The instrumentalist should have the ability to adequately read music at the same level as the suggested pieces.
  • Please bring an extra copy of your solo piece.

Brass

  • Solo: A standard concerto or sonata of your choice – 1st movement.
  • Scales: Major and their relative minor scales up to 5 sharps and 5 flats.
  • Articulation: Legato, staccato and double tonguing.
  • Horn and Trumpet: Advanced technique – Triple tonguing.
  • Trombones: The ability to play in the alto and tenor clefts.
  • Sight Reading: The instrumentalist should have the ability to adequately read music at the same level as the suggested pieces.
  • Please bring an extra copy of your solo piece.

Timpani &
Percussion

  • Ability to tune the timpani.
  • Ability to play three to five timpani.
  • For mallets: All major and minor scales.
  • Sight Reading: The instrumentalist should have the ability to adequately read music at the same level as the suggested pieces.
  • Please bring an extra copy of your solo piece.

Harp

  • Solo: A standard solo of your choice.
  • Scales: Four scales of your choice – full range.
  • Sight Reading: The instrumentalist should have the ability to adequately read music at the same level as the suggested pieces.
  • Please bring an extra copy of your solo piece.

Suggested Audition Pieces for Youth Orchestra


You may choose any piece of similar technique level.

Violin: Mozart concertos – 1st movement.

Viola: J.C. Bach, Handel or Hoffmeister concertos – 1st movement.

Cello: Haydn concertos – 1st movement.

Bass: Vivaldi sonatas – 1st and 2nd movements.

Flute: Poulenc sonata or Mozart concerto.

Piccolo: Vivaldi concertos.

Oboe: Haydn or Mozart concerto.

Horn: Mozart concerto.

Trumpet: Haydn or Hummel concerto.

Tuba: Haddah Suite.

Timpani: Delecluse Etude.

Snare Drum: Delecluse – Choose from the First Etudes.

Xylophone: Keyboard transcriptions by J.C. Bach.

Harp: Espana by Emmanuel Chabrier.

Chester Springs Chamber Strings

Strings

  • Scales: Major and their relative minor scales up to 5 sharps and 5 flats.
  • Bowing: Advanced technique in legato, staccato, spiccato, martele and detache.
  • Intonation: Intonation should be excellent in prepared music.
  • Sight Reading: The instrumentalist should have the ability to adequately read music at the same level as the suggested pieces.
  • Please bring an extra copy of your solo piece.

Suggested Audition Pieces for Chamber Strings


You may choose any piece of similar technique level.

Violin: Mozart concertos – 1st movement.

Viola: J.C. Bach, Handel or Hoffmeister concertos – 1st movement.

Chester Springs Sinfonietta

Strings

  • Solo: A solo from Suzuki Book 2 or 3.
  • Scales: Major Scales up to 3 sharps and 3 flats.
  • Positions: Technical proficiency in postions 1 through 5.
  • Sight Reading: The instrumentalist should have the ability to adequately read music at the same level as the suggested pieces.
  • Please bring an extra copy of your solo piece.
